The Montessori School of Tokyo (MST) is seeking an experienced registered nurse
to start as soon as possible and preferably from August 2021. Reporting to the Assistant Head
of School, the ideal candidate has a positive, enthusiastic, and self-motivated approach to their
work, is driven to strive for continual improvement, and has a high level of personal integrity.
Warm and caring, he/she will be skilled at managing health-related situations as they arise,
caring warmly, promptly and professionally for the needs of students and staff, and will be
up-to-date on the latest research and developments with regard to health and wellbeing.

Primary Role

- To provide health-related services and care according to school procedure and policies.
- To promote an optimal level of wellness of students and staff by providing preventative
health services and education that facilitate the school community’s physical, mental,
emotional, and social growth and development.
- Plans and implements school health management protocols
- Develops procedures and provides for first aid treatment and emergency nursing
management for injuries/illnesses
- Attends to serious injuries/illnesses and ensures a safe and comfortable transfer to
hospital (accompanies patient if needed)
- Maintains records of student health history including immunisations, allergy lists,
anaphylaxis action plans, and first aid supplies including Ventolin and EpiPens
- Provides health assessments, including screening and evaluating findings of deficit in
vision, hearing, growth, etc.
- Observes students as needed for developmental health assessments
- Interprets the health status of students to parents and school personnel
- Initiates - in conjunction with teachers - referral to parents or community health
resources for intervention, remediation and follow through
- Collaborates with others regarding student protection issues as needed
- Maintains, evaluates and interprets cumulative health data to accommodate individual
needs of students
- Participates in home visits when indicated to assess the family needs as related to the
student’s health
- Promotes and assists in the control of communicable diseases
- Provides health education and anticipatory guidance for students, staff, and parents
- Produces medical fact sheets for distribution to staff and parents
- Reports health and safety issues to leadership team
- Coordinates school and community health activities and serves as a liaison health
professional between the home, school, and community
- Manages sick bay and contacts families of students who become sick or injured at
- Manages the safe storage and administration of prescribed medication for students
- Coordinates influenza vaccinations
- Prepares documents on health matters, including the school’s anaphylaxis documents,
and action plans
- Organises annual CPR, AED, and First Aid training for staff
- Leads the formation of the school’s health policies, goals and objectives
- Where applicable, participates in the development of IEPs
- Develops care plans for students with ongoing conditions

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

- Qualified to practice as a registered nurse (RN) either in Japan or elsewhere
- Native Japanese speaker or high level of fluency, including in reading and writing
- Highly proficient in English, both written and spoken
- Exceptional organisational and record keeping skills
- Excellent cross-cultural communication, interpersonal, organisational, and
problem-solving skills
- Works calmly and effectively under pressure
- Knowledge of principles and practices underlying professional nursing and school health
- Knowledge of common school-related illnesses/conditions including asthma, epilepsy,
diabetes, etc.
- Ability to exercise professional judgment in making decisions
- Communicates appropriately, collaboratively, and effectively with relevant stakeholders
- Demonstrates genuine interest in the school population and its health needs
- Self-motivated and proactive in promoting optimal health and preventative measures
- Ability to appropriately manage and safeguard confidential information
- Certified in CPR

- Minimum of three years’ experience in public health nursing, community health nursing,
school health nursing or pediatric nursing
- Willingness to work for at least 3 years at MST
- Knowledge of national and local laws and policies relating to health and social issues
- Knowledge of many areas of health, including mental health
- Proficient at Google Workspace applications and maintaining databases
